Something is wrong

Something is wrong.
Oil price is rising. More than doubled in a year. This causes everything to go up. Fuel price rises. If you go fishing you need fuel. Fish prices rise.
As fuel becomes a lucrative commodity, it comes to pay if you make fuel from corn. Naturally corn runs short. Corn price goes up. This triggers the rapid increase in the prices of other crops such as soybeans, wheat...When the crop prices rise it pushes the meat price up.
You need fuel to generate electricity. Electricity bill runs up. Everything that uses electricity --- trains, convenience store (for no reason it is 24 hours luxuriously lighted), aluminum (notorious electricity guzzler when it is refined) --- rises. In short we are on the verge of serious worldwide inflation.
The world's population has reached 6.7 billion and keeps increasing rapidly. So we cannot avoid the risk of resource shortage. That is part of the reason for any of the resource price hike and serious intrinsic problem of capitalism. But here is something even more dangerous.
Capitalism economy believes in the balance between supply and demand. If there are many people who want oil and oil is in short supply, oil price goes up. And the reverse is also true. Thus the price is determined. But this way oil price is quite unstable because when something like, say, Iraqi war breaks out, oil price rapidly increases on speculation of oil shortage, which then has a great impact on our daily lives. So they contrived a way to avoid it. They started to deal with future prices. If you think oil prices will go up in future, you buy it now and sell it when the time comes when the price goes up. You get the margin, money. If actually Iraqi war happens and actually oil price rises you sell the oil you bought. So with your selling, oil price does not go up so much. This mechanism works as a stabilizer of prices. What a beautiful scheme!
It has been working well as long as it is performed on a moderate scale. Here arouse the problem.
As oil prices increased frantically, oil producers have begun to earn appallingly huge amount of money. As is often the case with the upstart rich, they have little idea on how to use the money. They have no technology to base a manufacturing industry, software industry... no real business. So they started to invest their money in stock market. At first their target was stock of companies they thought promising. But they began to know that there is more certain way to increase their money. That is ... investing the money they earned from selling oil in future oil. This is the safest bet since oil price will sure to go up because of the population growth and speculation of oil shortage. No worry about any loss. This way huge amount of money was put into the future market of oil. It currently amounts up to 10 times as large as spot trading. We have never once experienced in our history such kind of stupendous stupidity. 10 times bigger money than we are trading for our real use(実需) is being bet on imaginary future trade... What it means is oil price is no longer determined by real demand and supply. Even if worlds economy slows down and oil demand decreases temporarily, oil price will never go down so much because 10 times larger amount of money is still put in the oil market eying the future price rise. The same is true of iron, coal, crops, any other commodities.
All the prices will rise because there are people who makes incredibly large sum of money from it. They speculate on price hike in the future and the prices will actually rise due to the very speculation. So it will never stop. The gap between rich and poor will be sure to widen. World will become highly unstable. It is likely that most of the Japanese who do not have natural resources will be reduced to the poor group.
If there is something that will be able to stop it, it may be a tragedy on a large scale; world wide famine or possibly war. Sooner or later such catastrophic event will drastically decrease worlds population and finally it may stop. I wish we were clever enough to get around the problem without atrocity. But to me it looks impossible as long as we believe in capitalism or even a modified capitalism. The Earth may have been overpopulated by humans already; more than it can nurture.
