Much ado about nothing

Do you have anything you want to have now? You may have wanted a washing machine or fridge or a black and white TV 50 years ago. It might have been a car 30 years ago. It might have been a big screen liquid crystal TV, cell phone, ipod a couple of years ago. All these have been the things that was driving our economy. And now, what do I want to buy? I find nothing at all. I am a representative of my generation baby-boomers or what someone called is "gray brigade". If I feel there is nothing I want to buy, I am afraid all my generation feels the same.
What it means is we are losing the driving force of our economy. If there is a chance for an economy to grow it will be in such countries as China and India where people still have a feverish desire to own something like TV or PC that are already well spread among the developed countries with no prospect of sales growth. Their economy is sure to grow but the profit from their growth will not only be theirs. A large percentage of profit will go to developed countries whose economy is already stagnant and who are desperate to sell their products to these developing countries or lend money to get huge amount of return. So the developing countries cannot enjoy fully the outcome of economic growth as much as we, developed countries, did.
Anyway, still this may not be so bad, as long as they are growing. Growth is growth however small it may be. However..... what do you see beyond that? The day will soon come when all the things you want will have been possessed by you and all the people in the world. No one wants to buy anything special any more. There will be a replacement need for electric appliances or cars but nothing more. This is the day when our economy stops to grow. Thus the myth of economic growth will fizzle out. The day will come sooner or later whether you like it or not. Our Earth is limited. Our economy, on which our daily lives stand, is currently like a pyramid scheme. It doesn't take Einstein to predict the growth will end. A kindergarten kid could understand that the growth will end if you explained it to them. It is just the mathematical truth.
If so why not preparing for the day? What the zero or minus economy growth means to us if it is not temporary and it continues forever? It is about time we knew to be content with what we have now at least in a materialistic point of view and set our mind inside us. Perhaps we will know how much ado we have been making about nothing. What was it all about?
This depression is teaching us lessons. But unfortunately they still seem to stick to the economic growth myth.
