Greed

Several years ago in winter, when I was on a business trip in San Francisco.
A chemical plant in California suffered an explosion that spewed fumes of hydrogen sulfide (the substance that gives off "rotten egg" smell we usually have in 温泉) over the town. Within hours, hundreds of lawyers had descended on the excited town, handing out business cards and advising people to go to the local hospital. Twenty thousand residents eatgerly did so.
News footage of the event makes it look like some kind of open-air party. Of the twenty thousand happy, smiling, seemingly healthy people who lined up for examination at the hospital's emergency room, only twenty were actually admitted. Although the number of proven injuries was slight, to say the least, seventy thousand town people---virtually all---submitted claims. The company, Chevlon, agreed to a $ 180 million settlement. Of this, $40 million went to the lawyers.
Reading the news I couldn't help thinking of one of the Seven Deadly Sins, greed. Of course we need money. But this is absolutely not a healthy way to earn it. The only healthy way I believe is getting money for producing something. This is positive business. But getting money from others' mistake is a negative business. Lawyers, bankers... they are necessary, but too many would lead the boat to a mountain.
